Essay Instructions:

Guillermo Gómez-Peña on Radical Art
In the performance and lecture (Links to an external site.) by Guillermo Gómez-Peña, he suggests that artists must pose “critical questions” about corrupt systems, provoke new thought, cross and undermine borders (material and metaphorical), and imagine other ways of organizing the world. He also says, “I talk about art as critical thought and embodied theory, not as object or market. I talk about art as [in] uncompromising art practice, not ‘the art world.’”
1. What stood out to you about his performance and his arguments? Are they connected to other texts we have encountered this quarter?

2. He outlines some of his visions for the world with a list, each vision beginning with, “In my world [. . .].” He also says, “Imagination is my nation.”

Make your own list, allowing yourself to imagine the world in whatever way you’d like. Begin by filling in the blank: “___________________ is my nation.” Then write at least five lines that each begin with, “In my world [. . .].”

Be creative and honest. There are no right or wrong answers to this exercise.

According to Guillermo, for example, people have used artistry to create fake corporations that denounce environmental injustices (Tedx Talks, 2014). They have gone further to develop mysterious religion, communities, and languages which are more congruent with our aspirations. Some artists and writers have gone further to envision a parallel universe that we can engage in form meaningful freedom, and in this sense, democracy. His arguments are mirrors, reflecting the societal activities through art.
