According to Kracauer (2004), there were instinct films in the post WWI period during the 1920’s that highlighted impulses and disorderly lusts mostly set in disintegrated societies and settings. In the 1924 German film, the last laugh Emil Jannings is the hero of the silent film who is suddenly let go no longer working as a hotel doorman and his life loses meaning. In the scene where the main character realizes he has been replaced, he sees another doorman welcoming the guests and when he goes to confirm what he saw, a fellow doorman confirms his suspicions.
