Mekas is a Lithuanian filmmaker and poet based in New York. He has had a share of living an immigrant’s life after fleeing Lithuania. While fleeing, he stopped in Germany where he faced persecution and he was later imprisoned. Mekas has made many films about his own experiences as an immigrant as well as about other artists who have been through similar experiences. Hoberman is an American who earns his fortune criticizing films and writing about filmmakers’ experiences. Hoberman intends to write about Mekas’ conversations with film writers but is unable to due to some reasons. The purpose of this essay is to reflect why Hoberman is unable to criticize Mekas’ stories as well as a comprehensive report on Germany during the World War II.
Hoberman states that he is unable to write about Mekas after reading Casper’s article regarding Mekas’ experiences in Soviet. Mekas was young then and having gone through tough times in Germany it turned him into a hard headed tactician and he strongly opposed the authority, therefore, it is safe to say that Mekas’ arguments and works portray his own point of view (Hoberman, 2018). The Triumph of the Will is a film by Riefenstahl meant for Nazi supporters as it spreads Nazi propaganda. Mekas considers this film to be the most effective anti-Nazi film portraying Jews as being human and German oppressors as brutal and inhumane, therefore, an important aspect of history (Hoberman, 2018).
