Critical Reflection: District 9
Though viewed as a Sci-Fi, District 9 is one of the movies relating real life with entertainment. For a very long time, native South Africans suffered under the apartheid rule. This called for some patriots to stand and fight for their rights. Produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Neil Blomkamp, the movie addresses such themes like racism, neoliberalism, post-apartheid among others.
Racism is evident in the film (Vaught, 2011). There is a racial tension between aliens and human beings. Human beings consider themselves superior and refer to the extraterrestrial beings as Prawns. This was the same case native South Africans faced due to the inhabitation by the Whites. Africans were considered to be the inferior race. The Whites mistreated them, leading to a bitter resistance by Africans who stood up against apartheid. This has been captured in the movie.
