Film Analysis: Citizen Kane
One of the most peculiar incidents in the history of film was in 1941, when a first time director was able to introduce a new mode of artistry and expertise as an innovative cinematographer. Together with a handful of talented New York stage and radio actors, they were able to launch a movie that presented new applications from the era of sound and many artistic cinematography was emerging. The roots of the movie “Citizen Kane” are interesting and somewhat absurd, as Orson Welles, one of the leading cinematic innovator during that time was sponsored and support by RKO radio Pictures. The studio gave Welles the opportunity to create and shoot any picture he wanted. He was able to awe a lot of people due to his first movie in a collaboration with Herman Mankiewicz, a professional screenwriter. That movie was called “The American” and for a time, has practically dominated popular cinema.
One unique element of the film was the towers of Xanadu, which in a deeper aspect, represented Kane addressing political rally. Another, of a doorway of Kane’s mistress dissolving into a photo at a front-page of a rival newspaper, the camera angle zooming down toward a sulky looking Susan at a nightclub, the use of the reflection through parallel mirrors to capture a unique Kane slowly emerging from his thoughts and his obstacles. With the use of appealing cinematography techniques, the movie Citizen Kane presented much scenes that had excellent visual moments in it.
