Written agreements can be in an oral form or written making them legally enforceable. However, some contracts must be written to make them legally binding. The statute of fraud highlights six types of contracts that need to be written and duly signed (McKendrick, 2014). These contracts include marriage contracts, contracts that cannot be fulfilled within one year, such agreements includes construction projects that take two or more years (McKendrick, 2014).
Other written contracts include contracts for transferring land, contract of sales of goods worth over with higher value and contracts where individual guarantees someone debt or any other obligation. Even though contracts can either be formal or informal, formal contracts are preferable because they are enforceable by law as compared to informal contracts. Accordingly, God made agreements with his people to uphold their moral obligations. These contracts were morally binding and were more of an unconditional commitment to maintain integrity; therefore, it was essential to honor such agreements (Wang, Shi & Barnes, 2015).
For example, in Nehemiah 9:38 “In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites, and our priests are affixing their seals to it." Similarly, in Psalms 37:21 states "the wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously" (Bible Study Tools, 2014).
