Why Labor Unions Are Formed and Their Purpose
Labor Unions are organized groups formed to represent members when it comes to resolving workers disputes (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart & Wright, 2011). Labor Unions’ purpose is to ensure workers conditions are improved after negotiating with the employers on behalf of the workers.
Labor Unions are formed to represent member's interests in regards to employment. Labor Unions give workers a way to bargain with its management on issues affecting them since the voice of individual workers cannot be heard, Unions are used for collective negotiation (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart & Wright, 2011).
The purpose of Unions is to negotiate for better working-terms. Big companies need a unified way of understanding workers concerns as they rely on workers to generate profits. Labor Unions are formed to give workers opportunity to express their concerns and present their suggestion based on several aspects that will result in peaceful co-existence between the workers and the employer (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart & Wright, 2011).
Why has membership seen a decline in recent years?
The decline in union membership is as a result of drop in private membership. Compared to government workers Unions that have steady membership, private sector has been affected due to factors including downsizing that have seen many people losing their jobs. Furthermore, the government has developed comprehensive policies to address workers plight hence there is a decline in union membership .Since big companies splitting or folding up, smaller companies are merging whereby Unions are no relevant.
