Change Models
The chosen models are Lewin’s three-stage model and the Lippitt, Watson, and Westley’s model. Lewin developed the three-stage model and the field theory. The three steps are unfreezing, moving (change), and refreezing (2020). Unfreezing reflects the efforts for change to overcome the behaviors and practices being modified such as the pressures of individual resistance and group conformity. Moving is change to a new state by promoting change, through a strategy has positive incentives (2020). Refreezing the new change is necessary to make it permanent. The related field highlights the interaction of two groups of opposite forces where change is through driving forces and the restraining forces maintain the status quo.
The 1958 Lippitt, Watson, and Westley’s change model focuses on 5 steps from Lewin’s 3 steps. Like Lewin’s model, it includes the steps to ensure successful change management, but the steps are called phases. The first phase is developing a need for change, similar to Lewin’s unfreezing. Then there is establishment of a change relationship. This is followed by working toward change and corresponds to Lewin’s moving. The fourth phase is generalizing and stabilizing change similar to Lewin’s refreezing. The fifth phase is the terminal relationship (2020).
In both models, the first thing is to determine what needs to change and this depends on the current state of the organization and objective reasons that lead to change. Managing communication is necessary to facilitate change and address resistance to change through responding to all doubts and concerns of the people involved, showing an open attitude towards giving feedback.
