Globalization plays a role in the political economy of trade policy by creating interconnectedness. Basically, given that the society is becoming increasingly globalized, policymakers or governments have to consider generating laws and regulations that relate to international trade. Continued globalization requires an increased role for the governments to provide guidelines on how to improve international trade for the countries involved (Krugman, Obstfeld & Melitz, 2013). This means that globalization stems in political debates as an essential question and any trade policy crafted has to include strategies of running international trade or globalization.
In Trump’s administration, through the policy on international trade there are various international trade and investment treaties. There is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that is between the US, Canada, and Mexico. There is also the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) that is between the US and the EU.
