In the modern age, businesses exist to make more than profits. Organizations are striving to be more sustainable and socially responsible. As businesses work towards this, the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework has gained popularity. The framework indicates the importance of organizations considering three key factors; people, planet and profit while making business decisions. This handout demonstrates the similarities and differences when incorporating the TBL framework in manufacturing and service industries indicating strategies that can be used and providing examples of a strategy that is appropriate for both contexts.
When incorporating TBL into manufacturing and service industries, the following are similarities. In both industries, involving stakeholders is fundamental in the implementation of TBL. Stakeholders play a key role in implementing frameworks and hence cannot be ignored (Niu et al., 2022). When stakeholders are involved, they get a sense of belonging and work towards providing an enabling environment for the success of the framework. The contribution of the stakeholders ensures the long-term viability of the framework. At the same time, it ensures that the framework aligns with the values of the community. The success of TBL in both manufacturing and service industries depends largely on the level of involvement of stakeholders. Additionally, the implementation of TBL seeks to enhance the efficiency of organizations in the utilization of available resources. Both the manufacturing and service industries need to improve their efficiency and TBL helps them in doing so by reducing wastage and optimizing the consumption of energy.
However, while the incorporation of the TBL framework in manufacturing and service industries shares significant similarities, there are also differences. Firstly, the focus of both industries on the environment is different.
