Introduction
Decision making involves choosing between probable solutions to a problem or choosing between two or more courses of action. On the other hand, problem-solving consists of using broad and ad hoc methods of finding solutions to problems. Everyone makes decisions in life that range from simple decisions like what to wear to complex decisions like where to study.
In life, just like everyone else, I had periods when I had to make a decision that was so hard and critical. My childhood best friend started using drugs as we approached the age of 17. My parents came to know about it, and they were afraid I would follow him. They warned me and barred me from meeting my friend again, and the teachers in school did the same. As a friend, I could not abandon him, at the time of need, and therefore I resorted to help him by contacting a psychiatric and taking my friend to him. This meant I continued meeting him contrary to my parents' orders. They were furious, and it brought a lot of fights at home. With time, I came to learn my friend had psychological problems that needed counseling. I helped him through it, and he changed and stopped abusing substances. To arrive at this decision, I used the PMI method (Saaty, 2008).I listed all the good points about having my friends, the negatives and finally the interesting points. In the end, the positives won.
After college, I went to work in an industry where my uncle was one of the directors. With his influence, it was suggested that I be a supervisor after working there for only a month. I knew I was not experienced like most of the people I worked with, and I still had a lot to learn. As much as this was a tempting idea, I rejected it. It took me a week thinking about the prospect of increased salary and added privileges but I finally I decided not to take it, rather gain experience first. To come up with this decision, I used the T-chart technique where I jotted down the pros and the cons of this decision.
