Short term Methods of Containing Coronavirus
The C2019 corona virus pandemic has affected all industries in most world countries. It is a respiratory disease that mostly attacks the lungs and weakens the immune system. In January when the disease had not spread from its ground zero in Wuhan, there were different misconceptions regarding the disease including the one that it was only killing the elderly. However, recent research shows that it attacks people from all age groups, including young children as young as 3 years. It is therefore a global problem that needs collaboration between different countries and organizations to contain it. During the initial stages in January 2020, the virus had the highest number of infections in China, and countries such as the United States did envision that the disease could have affected them so tremendously. Currently, the United States is the most affected country, followed by Italy and Spain. Most health pandemics require time to develop vaccines and find permanent solutions. Before then, people must develop short term ways of containing the disease including social distancing, the use of masks and hand sanitizers.
At its early stages of the coronavirus pandemic that originated in Wuhan, there was uncertainty as to where the disease originated, its transmissibility (Huang et al., 2020). Due the uncertain nature of the disease, the Chinese authorities introduced various strict measures to tray and slow down the spreading rates of the disease. Chinese authorities closed down contact between main population centers by closing city borders and paralyzing the public transport system. The coronavirus is not the first respiratory disease to occur and become a pandemic. The Acute respiratory syndrome emerged between 2002 and 2003. Scientists discovered that the diseases had originated from a Chinese animal reservoir where it had started to spread widely before application of short term methods. Methods such as wearing of masks, hygiene and reducing physical contact are some of the short term tactics that were used during the 2002 outbreak before long term solutions could be effected.
Given the fast spread of the disease around the world, health organizations such as the world health organization have issued guidance on the measures to prevent the spread of the virus as short term solutions. Social distancing is one of the most effective short term prevention measure that has been suggested by the world health organization. The Coronavirus disease primarily transmits from one individual to another through aerosol droplets (Diaz-Quijano, Rodriguez-Morales & Waldman, 2020). A statistical test by Liautaud, Huybers & Santillana (2020) showed that keeping distances of more than 1 meter between individuals reduced the risk of spreading the coronavirus although the test was only done in high risk environments by at least 40%. Avoiding the gatherings and social contact is an effective means of averting the spread of the disease, but people who must meet and contact each other physically should ensure that they maintain a social distance of at least one meter to reduce the risk of spread...
