Case Study Overview
Objectives
There are two case studies due in this course. Each case is described below and noted in the Assignment section of Weeks 5 and 7. The cases studies are due at the end of of the week. Each case study focuses on key points in the understanding and the application of concepts being studied. They provide the opportunity for you to apply the concepts presented to a real-world problem or situation by identifying the problem, searching for solutions, and documenting and justifying your results and conclusions.
General Case Study GuidelinesYour case study will adhere to these specifications in addition to the specifications noted for each weekly case study below. Each case study is due by the end of class in the week it is due. Not more that 35% of the content can be taken directly from all sources. This means if Turnitin is used, then the similarity index must be 35% or lower. The final score of the case study will be reduced by 1 point for each percentage point over 35%. This percentage may initially appear high; however, if the suggested format noted below is utilized, the headings, which use the questions, will contribute approximately 15% to the similarity index. A list of common errors found in case studies can be found in this document: "Common Case Study Errors," which can be downloaded from the the Course Resources page within the Course Specific Resources section.
The format of the paper should conform to Publication Manual for the American Psychological Association ( APA) sixth edition for the title page, introduction, body text, citations, references, and so forth. A basic APA template to work from can be found here. A basic APA tutorial can be found in the Web Links section of Course Resources. All graphics are to be a part of the single case study document you submit. For the APA template, download the document from the the Course Resources page within the Course Specific Resources section.
Note: Wikipedia and unauthored websites are not acceptable sources. Do not use these types of sources, otherwise you will lose points.
Each case is to be completed by student submitting the case. The student must work alone and reflect the work of that student. All DeVry University policies are in effect, including the plagiarism policy. Late papers will not be accepted without prior permission.
Submit completed papers as a Microsoft Word-formatted document. Documents authored in other applications, such as WordPerfect or Microsoft Works, will not be accepted. A sample case study can be found by downloading this document "Sample Case Study," which can be downloaded from the the Course Resources page within the Course Specific Resources section.
Week 5 Case StudyIn addition to the above specifications, these specifics apply to this specific case study.
This is a personal case study. Each case study will be unique to the student submitting it.
By Wednesday of Week 1 forecasts the scores you think you will achieve for Weeks, 1, 2, 3, and 4 and send them to your professor."During Week 5, using your actual scores for Weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4 and your forecast values, calculate a regression equation, r, and R2 for this data.Prepare a case study document to answer the following questions. The case study should have a cover page, intro, and body that follows APA format. If a reference is used, such as our text, then a reference page should be included, and appropriate citation(s) should appear in the body of your case study. See the sample case study above for guidance.1. What data did you use in your regression equation? Which is the independent and dependent variable?2. What is the regression equation, r, and R2 for your data?3. Statistically, what does r and R2 tell you?4. Based on your empirical evidence, how who well did you forecast your results? Justify your response. You can use any method you like to complete this assignment; however, you need to show your work. Two items in Excel are useful. The correl function will return the correlation coefficient and add-in called "Data Analysis" has a function called regression that will provide all the rest of the information you should need.
Week 7 Case StudyIn addition to the above specifications, they apply to this specific case study.
This case study is the Southwestern University (A)* Case Study located in your textbook. The student will submit a case study of at least 500 words, not including title page and references. At least one source, our course textbook, must be used as a reference in the development of the case study. More references can be used, if desired. Additional references can be from academic journals, professional or academic textbooks, authored websites, or standard business publications, such as The Wall Street Journal.
Best Practices and Content OutlineThe following are the best practices in preparing and formatting your case study. A sample case study solution can be downloaded above. Follow APA guidelines in constructing your case study. Note: The Case Study Solution is formatted per APA. An APA tutorial can be found in the Web Links section of the Course Resources under Course Home.
Title page: This page includes whom you prepared the paper for, who prepared it, and the date. Follow APA guidelines for the format. (See sample Case Study Solution.)
Introduction: The introduction tells the reader where the author is going. Three or four sentences is usually enough. The introduction should not have a title because it is always in the same place in an APA paper.
Discussion: The discussion should be a paragraph or two. It should summarize the case for the reader.
Questions: You can make it easier for the reader to follow where you are going by using the questions as headings for your specific answers. (See the sample Case Study Solution.) Your answers can include your opinions, but they should be grounded in fact. Thus, parenthetical citations from appropriate locations in our text and other references are expected. You should be able to answer each question in one or two short paragraphs, but they can be longer, if you desire. One-sentence answers generally do not result in obtaining full credit for the question.
Conclusion: Provide a summary and any conclusions you have formulated about the case. Summarizing is similar to paraphrasing but presents the gist of the material in fewer words than the original. A conclusion identifies the main ideas and major support points from the body of your paper. Minor details are left out. The summary could include benefits of the ideas presented and their effects. Follow APA guidelines for the format.
References: References are required. Follow APA guidelines for the format.
Here are some additional hints on preparing the best possible project.
Use a four-step writing process: plan, write, complete, and review.Prepare an outline of the case study before you go forward.Complete a first draft and then go back to edit, evaluate, and make any changes required. I find it useful to leave the paper alone for a day before trying to do any reviewing.Use visual communication only if it will help clarify and support your work. Any materials that can be removed and not affect the clarity of your work are essentially fillers and should be avoided. Fillers distract from the flow of your work and will most likely cause you to lose points.

Southwestern University Football Stadium Case Study
Southwestern University (SWU) has decided that the current football stadium should be expanded, but the contractor has only 270 days for the construction before the next season of football match. There are also set consequences of a penalty amounting to $10,000 should the expansion take additional days. The contractor also risks ruining his company’s reputation. Following these repercussions, Mr. Bob Hill demands that he be 75% sure that the construction will be accomplished within the 270 days specified by the president. He should then finish early and now asks for the cost of finishing the stadium expansion within 240 days and 240 days. Hill wants to be 75% confident that the project will be done within or before the 270th day and if the confidence is less than 75%, the project will have to be crashed. Besides the timelines, Hill wants to compare these target dates of 240 and 270 days with cost differences. For this analysis, it is necessary to identify the activity timelines, construct a network diagram, find out the completion probability in less than 270 days, and if the crash project will be required to meet the desired deadline, an estimation of addition cost of the project should be provided.
Question 1: Develop a network drawing for Hill Construction and determine the critical path. How long is the project expected to take?
Following the development of a network diagram, it is then necessary to determine the expected time (t) required for the activities. The time will be distributed through the entire network diagram prior to performing slack time computations. Slack time refers to the length of time that an activity can be delayed without necessarily hampering the whole project. These activities are considered to be critical/vital/important if the slack time is zero and they form a path knows as the critical path. From the above network diagram, the critical path is shown by orange color in boxes A, C, D, G, H, I, and L.
