Assignment Expectations

Your paper will be evaluated using the following five (5) criteria:

  • Assignment-Driven Criteria (Precision and Breadth): Does the paper fully address all Keys to the Assignment? Are the concepts behind the Keys to the Assignment addressed accurately and precisely using sound logic? Does the paper meet minimum length requirements?
  • Critical Thinking (Critical Thinking and Depth): Does the paper demonstrate graduate-level analysis, in which information derived from multiple sources, expert opinions, and assumptions has been critically evaluated and synthesized in the formulation of a logical set of conclusions? Does the paper address the topic with sufficient depth of discussion and analysis?
  • Business Writing (Clarity and Organization): Is the paper well written (clear, developed logically, and well organized)? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are section headings included in all papers? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding to the Keys to the Assignment, or is justification/support instead conveyed through excessive use of direct quotations?
  • Effective Use of Information (Information Literacy and References): Does the paper demonstrate that the student has read, understood and can apply the background materials for the module? If required, has the student demonstrated effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Do additional sources used in paper provide strong support for conclusions drawn, and do they help in shaping the overall paper?
  • Citing Sources: Does the student demonstrate understanding of APA Style of referencing, by inclusion of proper end references and in-text citations (for paraphrased text and direct quotations) as appropriate? Have all sources (e.g., references used from the Background page, the assignment readings, and outside research) been included, and are these properly cited? Have all end references been included within the body of the paper as in-text citations?

Tips and Suggestions

  1. Your paper will be graded on the following:
  • Your ability to apply utilitarianism to the decision faced by the transistor/supplier company;
  • Your ability to apply the Utility Test and your choice of the five tests to the problem confronting the supplier;
  • The extent to which you have logically and critically compared and contrasted the results from the two tests; and
  • Your assessment as to which of the two tests best informs the Case.

Utilitarian Ethics: The Sole Remaining Supplier
Over the recent past, technology has influenced how people do business. Technology has led to the innovation and creation of new products and services. However, these products and services have developed new issues concerning how people conduct their business. For instance, technology has enhanced ethics on business. On the other hand, technology has also brought other negative ethical issues for many organizations. The case of sole remaining supplier is a perfect example of how technology has challenged many businesses on the issue of ethics. This case presents a company in a dilemma after it is involved in business with a company known to produce pacemakers that cause death to its users. This is a serious ethical and moral issue. In addition, the case presents an ethical dilemma that many leaders are faced with but can be solved using the utilitarian ethics.
The key utilitarian ethical problems confronting the supplier/transistor company in this Case
In the case of sole remaining supplier, the utilitarian ethical issue in the center of the dilemma is what actions the transistor company will take that will be of greatest good for the majority of people it serves. There are moral issues associated with the risk of human error from the pacemakers. Therefore, this leaves many lives of people at risks. However, the hard question lies on whether the lifesaving advantages offered by the pacemaker outweigh the risks associated with its use. Among the fact that are presented in this case is the death of an infant due to an error in the pacemaker. In another case a user died while yawning due to the disconnections in the wire connecting to the pacemaker to his chest. Legally the company supplying the raw materials, in this case the transistors, that are used to make the pacemaker has an ethical and moral responsibility for the death caused by these faulty devices. In addition, the company is also legally bound to protect the interests of the shareholder and protect their investments in the company. Any law suit presented against the company will be adversely affecting the shareholders.
What Jeremy Bentham would have given the supplier company
Jeremy Bentham would have advised the transistor company to consider the future of their business. First, he would have advised the two companies to work together. Since he believed all business should minimize pain and maximize pleasure, the two companies should work together to achieve this common goal .Additionally, Jeremy Bentham was concerned about ethics in business, he would have advised them to get involved in testing for the devices made by the pacemaker company. Furthermore, he would have advised them to recognize their liability in the business they undertake with the pacemaker company. In this case, liability is a concern for both the transistor and the pacemaker company. Jeremy Bentham believed that the interest of all parties in business should be the interest of the society. Although the argument that the pacemakers are used to save the many lives can be valid, the company should deeply consider the ethical and moral responsibility to conduct t...
