Purpose of the database
The aim of the database is to keep track of student’s information on courses enrolled and instructors who teach each of the courses. There are various departments, while students can enroll in various courses, but each course is only taught by one instructor. At the same time, the instructor may teach different courses. A well designed database will organize the data to facilitate access, management, retrieval and updating relevant information related to student enrollment and courses taught.
Entities and attributes of the database
The entities of the database are the tables, while the attributes are the features that describe the tables, and there is a relationship that links the tables (Halpin & Morgan, 2008). The entities are students, course and instructor.
Students: the student ID (or social security number), last name and first name, phone numbers, start date, addresses, email addresses, date of birth and gender
Course: Course ID, the course name, course offered in school/ department, sections, instructors
Instructor: Instructor ID, instructor name, address, phone number, email address, gender and date of birth, and courses taught.
There is also need to determine whether the students have completed each course that they have enrolled in.
