For the past few weeks, I have noticed a number of changes in myself. Perhaps one of the most glaring is my new found interest in sustainable business practices. From our work on “Systems of Survival” and “What Money Can't Buy”, I have realized a number of things. First is that business has a unique role to play in society that is so different from politics. Second, business is unable to fulfill its real purpose. Through these realizations, I have found it important to go beyond the assigned readings in class – I made my own research in order to understand the situation better and formulate possible solutions. Through my readings, I went deeper into the problem of business and have found interconnections. For example, I discovered that many issues like hunger and malnutrition, poverty, social and gender discrimination may have its roots in the incorrect conduct of business.
Because I have taken initiative in researching about our topics in class, I discovered that I have also learned how to analyze issues better. Intuitively, I have learned to use a systems approach in analyzing. When I read any article, I typically think of other industries or sectors of society that may be connected with the issue at hand. Take for example the issue of climate change. While reading, I found myself asking, “what is so important about these climate talks? How many people are paying attention to this?” Having these questions led me to search more about climate change and found articles relating it to long-term development – how we can be the first generation to possibly end poverty and how climate change can reverse the economic d...
