Most manufacturing companies, especially those dealing with tangible products, usually focus much on the design of their goods. Product design constitutes a combination of all the features that make the product appealing before the eyes of a customer. This brings to the fore the importance of product design as well as factors that determine whether a design is good or not.
Product design is important because it helps to differentiate a particular product from another. For example, the designs of Samsung and Lenovo gadgets is what sets them apart (Chitale,n.d.). In other terms, product design is what gives a particular company or business, an edge over the rest of the competition, in a given market. As initially noted, the design is the first impression made to the client, and as a result, it might be the single most crucial factor that determines whether the client would buy a particular product, or the other. Product design therefore, is what determines the attractiveness of a particular good, to the client and hence, to the larger market that the business targets (Rusten & Bryson, 2010).
There are a number of factors that affect a good design. These are almost similar to the factors that determine production, only that they have some element of the customer’s input. These factors include the cost of material to be used, the customers’ preferences, the company’s quality policy, as well as the cost to price ratio.
