Business ethicists claim that the recent spate of business leaders, especially bankers, who have admitted to unethical behavior, is not surprising. In fact, these experts explain that when rewards are high and risks are low, the brain often gives the green light to cheat. So how to stop unethical corporate cultures that arise from such a natural human response?
Mark Frame, a psychology professor at Middle Tennessee State University who specializes in workplace psychology, says to begin by communicating solid business values to stakeholders. "If you advertise that you are trying to be ethical, you're going to wind up hiring more ethical people. It's kind of that field of dreams thing: If you build it, they will come," he says.
But words must be followed by actions, so the next step is to thwart unethical behavior. Operating under the tacit rule that "it's okay as long as we're not caught" is insufficient. UC Berkeley professor Barry Staw says companies need to make their stance clear: When employees cross a legal line, they will lose their job and possibly be reported to authorities. Such a strategy invokes fear of punishment over reward for good behavior.
Making ethical choices may not be innate, but people can be taught why making moral choices is ultimately in their best interests, says Dave Mayer, a management professor at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. He tells his students that the best way to test whether an action is ethical is to ask oneself: Is what I'm planning to do the right thing or is it simply in my own self interest? If the answer is the latter, it's probably not the best way to go.

Introduction
One of the main pillars in business is ethics, as it integrates with operations and the staffs interactions at various levels. Most firms develop ethics by integrating the right practices in the corporate culture. Constant professional training is crucial as it helps the staffs to align their values with those of the firm.
Ethics
If I worked for a company where I witness cheating in any form directed to the rest of the staffs or the clients, the first thing that I would do is to notify the person. Engaging the person who is misusing their position helps to understand the situation. In some cases, there is always a deep-seated problem that could have led that person to commit such act despite the company policies. As such, understanding whether that person committed the offence out of pressure at work or home is crucial to determining the next step of action.
If they cheated due to pressure it important to recommend professional help. However, if they did it out of their accord relative to a bad habit, it is important to suggest seeking professional help. It is also crucial to warn them of the consequences that could befall those (Fine, 2014). If the affected person does not change, it is important to speak to a person in the immediate authority such as supervisors to try and help the situation. If the situation does not change it is important that the case is brought to the attention of the management.
Creating ethical cultures at work
To create an ethical culture, it is important to make sure that there exist structures and policies to support the changes that are supposed to be implemented. Such systems form the backbone and guidelines to help all the staffs to internalize their habits and behavior towards ethical practices. It is also crucial the policies include some form of reward and sense of belonging to the staffs. According to Cialdini, reciprocity is one of the key principles that push people to do the right thing and ideally what they are expected (Mindtools.com, 2015). Policies established, have to state clearly the state expectations so that staffs and the management understand boundaries that they should never cross. To create an ethical culture at the firm, it is crucial that there is some element of consistency and commitment to the course.
One other step of creating the culture is to make sure that the management and the rest of the top officials understand the changes that have to take place. The management has to show through actions that there are changes that have been effected and that the staffs are not the only ones that are expected to follow them. According to Cialdini’s principles, one of the elements of influencing people is authority. If the rest of the staff sees that the people in authority are taking the changes in their steps, they will also feel compelled to do the same (Mindtools.com, 2015).
