Request for Approval to Create and Implement a Community Program that Will Ensure Proper and Functional Smoke Detectors in Each Home
INTRODUCTION
I’d like your permission for creation and implementation of a community program that would ensure each home has the proper amount of working smoke alarms and assist the community in maintaining functional smoke alarms. Kindly find in this memo some of the highlighted benefits that I feel may help you as you make the decision.
CHALLENGE
An astounding 85 percent of all fire deaths occur in the home, and the majority happens at night when most people are sleeping (Fire Prevention Week, 2014). Smoke alarms are an important first line of defense against fire. A preliminary research from Fairfield Fire Department indicates that smoke alarms in 1 in every 5 homes in America are not in a working condition.
POTENTIAL SOLUTION
Installing smoke detectors is one of the most important things people can do to their homes to protect themselves from fires because they are simple and inexpensive to maintain and reduces the chances of potential serious fire injuries or death by 50 percent. I am proposing for the fire department to create and manage a preparedness program that will allow community members to sign up for annual smoke detector evaluations. The program will also oversee a ten year smoke alarm replacements and engage the community in emergency preparedness training. This program will have shared responsibilities with community groups such as churches, boys and girls clubs, and homeowners associations among others. The fire department could hold classes to teach the community and community fire preparedness leaders how to evaluate smoke alarms, exchange/fix, and how to teach the families fire preparedness tips.
RESEARCH REQUEST
I am requesting the creation of my proposed community program as my research has validated the benefits of ensuring each home has the proper amount of working smoke alarms and the need to assist the community in maintaining functional smoke alarms.
