UPS is an international package delivery service that has headquarters in Atlanta Georgia. The company also offers a wide range of services including freight transportation, development of state of the art technology to effectively manage businesses all around the globe, intervention in international trade and healthcare services.
Basic description of the Company
According to Carol B. Tom, the current CEO of UPS, the company’s vision is, ‘Strong today. Creating our tomorrow.’ UPS believes in building an enterprise that not only benefits the current generation but also profits the future. Additionally, employees, customers and shareholders are encouraged to think of the organization in long term in order to ensure its success. The mission statement revolves around four aspects. The first aspect is the growth of the business (Business Strategy Hub, 2020). The company hopes to expand by offering its customers goods and services of premium quality. The second aspect is being a profit generating company. UPS aims at generating a substantial profit in order to guarantee decent returns to its stakeholders. The third aspect is inspiring people. The company hopes to inspire people by not only providing them with opportunities which promote their personal growth but also helping them give back to the society. The last aspect is making a difference (UPS Pressroom, 2020). UPS believes in a strict moral and ethical code and projects this by making the society better for the good of future generation.
The company was founded back in 1907 by James E. Casey and Clause Ryan. Back then company only made local deliveries but the vision oriented CEOs have seen to its rapid growth until it became the behemoth it is today. The company not only effects change on a local scale, but also globally. UPS currently has 444,000 employees in 220 economies around the world. However, it relies on other business partners to make sure the deliveries get to the required destinations on time. To add on that, it generates 20% revenue on international packages. Much of this success is attributed to the company’s culture. The company is held together by a shared purpose, values and common principles. The company’s culture revolves around four principles. The first principle is quality. Anyone can join the package industry. However, UPS offers its customer is quality services. The second trait is dependability (UPS Pressroom, 2020). The company engineers this trait by creating back-up plans that ensure the deliveries get to their required destinations on time even when difficulties arise. The third value is constructive dissatisfaction. The company staff has a habit of making little adjustments because they believe there is always room for improvement. The last value is integrity. The company believes in doing the right thing at all times without making compromises. This culture has served the company for 70 years and given it a competitive advantage in the industry.
