Motivation is a crucial component in an organization culture and management process. Motivation refers to the innermost desire or push to achieve the set goals or achieving specific performance level. Organizations are determined to motivate its employees towards improving their productivity and performance level. For managers to select the appropriate methods of motivation, they ought to examine individuals’ needs to identify the key elements that motivates humans’ behaviour. Essentially, there are dozens of scientific theories that have attempted to explain the rational of human motivations. Thus, the paper highlights the three basic theories of motivation as well as their descriptions.
First, Hertzberg’s two-factor theory is a motivational theory that was coined by scientist Frederick Herzberg in the 1950s. The theory established that there are two distinctive factors that influence employees’ satisfaction and motivation. The two factors include; motivators’ and hygiene factors (Beck, 2014). According to Herzberg, motivator factors are the essential elements that brings satisfaction to employees’ need as it motivates them to be productive. These factors include providing good working environment, performance recognition and career promotion and progression. On the other hand, hygiene factors comprises of elements that causes dissatisfaction on employees if they are not met. These aspects include company policies, employer-employee relationship, organization culture and benefits (Beck, 2014). From these findings, Hertzberg asserted that, despite the fact that both motivational and hygiene factors contribute to employee motivation, the two components are known to work independence of each other. In the workplace, employee fill motivated and satisfied when either of their motivators or hygiene factors are met as they become determined to grow and progress the firm.
