Apple related diversification and unrelated diversification
Apple has focused on related diversification to a small extent with the launch of new product range with emphasis on new and innovative products. Apple remains one of the main players in the Smartphone and computer sector. Apple has also expanded the products using the iOS and macOS operating systems. Apple’s iPhone the company’s main product has been sold under various versions, the latest being iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro (Apple, 2019).
The iPhone remains Apple’s most successful product, but been sales for the iPhone have been declining and there is increased competition from China, and Apple increasingly focuses on the content creation business to improve unrelated diversification. However, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook has been slow to provide details on the company’s strategy on the original content market unlike Amazon. The digital strategy relies on the existing distribution channels and mainly focuses on original content.
Samsung related diversification and unrelated diversification
Samsung started as a grocery trading store in 1938 and entered the electronics sector in the 1970s, which is the main business sector for the South Korean conglomerate (Burris, 2019). The company has expanded its business operations diversifying into related products including those related to personal computers. For instance, Samsung manufactures semi conductors and various consumer electronic devices including TVs, computers, flash memory, RAMs, smartphones and printers. Other products include entertainment, systems air conditioners, microwave ovens, refrigerators, washing machines, network system, digital cameras LCD and LED panels.
Samsung has engaged more extensively on unrelated diversification when compared to Apple. Samsung’s business segments include the Consumer Electronics (CE), Device Solutions, Harman, Information Technology and Mobile Communications (GlobalData, 2018). The company has also provided solutions to other sectors including the hospitality industry, finance education, insurance, and construction industry as well as the government (GlobalData, 2018).
