Chapter 6: Telecommunications and Networking (p. 171-208)
Rainer, R. K., & Prince, B. (2020) Introduction to information systems (8th ed.)Wiley
Mobility in computing is becoming a primary driving factor for businesses, especially following the Covid-19 pandemic. When the pandemic hit, many businesses were not ready to send their workers home and did not have the networking infrastructure in place to support secure remote access to business resources. The move to support remote access not only hit businesses but also major internet and cellular providers who were also not set up to handle the massive changes in demand for service. Consider a small to medium sized business (SMB) of your choosing. In a 2-3 page APA-formatted paper, address the following:
Where should the business focus its networking hardware configuration: physical wiring or wireless?
Which telecommunications and/or networking components should the business acquire and implement to provide secure access to business resources and information?
Which security challenges does the company face in supporting remote access for employees?
Support your reasoning and recommendations with outside resources using proper citations and references.

Mobility in Computing
A potential small to medium-sized business (SMB) to consider is a medical store. Mobility in computing influences such an entrepreneurship operation through technology in improving medication adherence, tracking patients, symptoms, and side effects, and providing prescription refills using digital platforms. Telecommunication models in a medical store help keep clients or patients informed about medications and treatment progress. Amid the change driven by natural factors, this paper addressed how business units can focus on networking hardware configurations, telecommunication components to acquire, and security challenges.
Networking Hardware Configuration
A network configuration establishes controls, information flow, and operations to sustain organizational communication. A computer infrastructure is the backbone of remote business, meaning a well-built network would support all the devices, software, applications, and work processes. One area the medical store can focus its configuration on is physical wiring in the main office and wireless connections at homes. Planning the design and acquisition of hardware for a business computer network is paramount. Securing a room within a specified location is necessary to host the local network (Feldmann et al., 2020). Basic requirements for the facility will include a secure door with biometric entry systems, a card reader, or a push button. Electric services are vital to power network tools with specified voltage and circuity.
On the other hand, with the need to operate remotely, securing wireless network configuration is vital and faster to adapt. SMBs can witness higher productivity, flexible application, and workers' satisfaction with wireless connections (Weideman & Hofmeyr, 2020). Today, more SMBs have remote access potentials built into networks for security as wireless infrastructure makes reconfiguring office spaces and organizational change easier. Moreover, a local area network (LAN) is inexpensive. Compared to the cost of running network cables throughout a building, going wireless for an SMB is an obvious choice.
Telecommunications and Networking Components
To provide secured access to business information like patient data and resources such as medications, there are telecommunication and networking components the medical store will require. A wireless connection has structural elements similar to a traditional cable-wired network but utilizes radio frequency technology to pass data around the system (Gupta, 2019). Essential components of a wireless LAN include access points, interface cards, media access control (MAC), encryption systems, and virtual private network (VPN) security controls. An access point will help to receive and transmit information from or to all wireless devices of employees in their areas. For secured access to business information, using a VPN coupled with other security techniques like password setups and encryptions would make the business's wir...
