Background

George Latour is attempting to lead and coach a new employee, Shelly Stern. The relationship quickly goes downhill as George's leadership style runs afoul of Shelly's sense of professionalism.

Assignment

After reading the case and commentaries, provide your own commentary in a 4- to 5-page paper on George's leadership, drawing on the theories and models presented in this chapter.

In your analysis, consider the following three questions:

  1. How would you characterize George's leadership style?
  2. Is it the appropriate style? Why or why not? (Hint: consider the characteristics of the environment, the employee, the task, leader discretion, etc.)
  3. What strategies can Shelley employ to better manage her boss? (To answer this question, you may want to read this short piece by Harry E. Chambers: (You can find it through the EBSCO database in Business Source Complete).

  • Effective Use of Information (Information Literacy and References): Does the paper demonstrate that the student has read, understood and can apply the background materials for the module?  If required, has the student demonstrated effective research, as evidenced by student’s use of relevant and quality (library?) sources? Leadership theory surrounds providing cooperate governance to the employees and other stakeholders in a business organization. Good leaders are endowed to compose of traits that uplift their capacitive responsibilities above non leaders. For instance, entrepreneurial leaders possess drive, integrity, desire for achievements, responsibility, cohesive decision making and self-confidence.
Drive pertains the motive behind a given action. For instance, the entrepreneurial motive may be initiated by ambition and tenacity. Achievements plays important role in determining the willingness and effort a leader will employ in order to attain the goals set. High achievement provides satisfaction to the administration board and other management groups in an organization through success (Blick, 2011). Moreover, the progress tops the self-confidence to worker to compete in more challenging projects. The stakeholders combine different expertise and knowhow to initiate success of the set projects.
Managers apply the entrepreneurial skills to communicate the desired objectives to the workmates thus maintaining the perceived standards of production. Similarly, workers are expected to communicate their experiences; either challenges, ideas or other concerns to the management in order to improve the working environment as well as the production levels. This highlights the importance of considering every partner in the organization as an important asset in growth and development of the company (Blick, 2011).

From our case study, George demonstrates ‘raw state of power’ against his juniors. For instance he directs Shelley to use a stronger quote for self interest “According to CEO George Latour, anyone who isn’t using the PrexoPro Toolset is using Stone Age Technology.” Shelley thought that it would be softer to maintain the statement since it was just a business headline. George intentions for change in the press headline is a way of marketing his importance in the overseeing the success of Rectonic Company.
George Louters intends to control the production and performance capacity of Rectonic by taking the centre stage of the company. Rather, he demonstrates a dictatorial leadership where he wants most duties to be undertaken his way. He relies on minute engineering ideas from other stakeholders in order, and presumable echo them to indicate his contributions in the development of the company. He is not supportive to Shelley, hence depriving her of the self-belief and confidence to participate actively in the growth and development of the company.
George Louters highly regard submissiveness of other employees as key aspect on manipulating him in his ways. This includes giving approvals to any projected activities in the organization. He is a micromanager stereotype whereby he demands reports from Shelley even on occurrence of minor activities. Moreover, some of the reports he is claiming are not entitled to be presented to him. Despite Shelley avoiding criticism on her work, George would have gunned the necessary support to Shelley, hence helping by changing her altitude and working behaviors.
