Introduction
After joining SK Telecom, Ms. Myers saw it as only her golden chance to work in a Korean Company, and proof her leadership ability by initiating goals that would make the company more global. However, everything took unexpected turn when she found herself not able to navigate her new work-environment. She was not given an official orientation, and her superiors did not give her a detailed guidance on how the organization operated. Moreover, her biggest challenge in the new opportunity was that her employer had a different view on what she thought her roles would be (Green, 2011). This paper intends to analyze Ms. Myers challenges while working at SK Telecom in South Korea using Hofstede's five dimensions of culture.
The first of the five dimensions of culture is social-orientation. This dimension involves a person's perceptions on the roles he/she should play. One extreme is of this dimension is individualism. Considering the case at hand, Korean society embraces collectivism, unlike American society, which adopts individualism. When Ms. Myers joined SK Telecom, her primary objective was to make the organization more global. Her thoughts were centered on how she would execute her roles not how she would work with the rest of the staff to realize the organization's goals. Because of her individualistic view of issues, she found herself not concurring with her employer on what her roles would be. This posed a big challenge to her, and she found it hard to maneuver in her new work-env...
