Malaysia is one of the countries that has not approved the (ICERD) International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The Malaysian government embraces Malay supremacy or the supremacy of the majority. This is as the Malay make up to 51% of the Malaysian population according to data by the Department of Statistics in 2010 (Kumar, 2012). Racial and ethnic tension stems from various religious and cultural norms that dominate most people in Malaysia. The effects of this tension are felt both socially and economically by the different ethnic groups in Malaysia.
