Being a line manager requires coaching and mentoring to support the growth of other people in the organization. A line manager has an active role in mentoring in every step of career management and growth. They play this role because they are actively interacting with the staff and this gives them an opportunity to counsel and direct others. For example, while working as an intern at Shopcade group, James Flan as the marketing project manager acted as a mentor. Flan created an environment that was supportive and open for discussion. He developed an environment of trust by counseling the interns and allowing us to ask questions as much as possible. Sometimes he used his personal experiences to motivate us and encourage us on how leadership develops with time.
Flan had great characteristics of a mentor that encouraged the interns to be focused. He had the ability and willingness to share what he knew about what makes a successful marketing manager. Flan explained his knowledge, skills, as well as expertise in the field of marketing and the best way for marketing assistants to make it to the top. He had the ability to listen to the questions posed by the interns and always available to answer them to the best of his ability. Flan created an environment of trust such that as interns it was easy to approach him with inquiries and personal input. He took a personal interest in forging a working relationship with the interns and correcting where he saw interns going wrong.
