Introduction
Labor unions in the developed countries are against trade agreements with low- wage countries arguing that allowing an unregulated import flow from the developing countries will lead to loss of jobs and lowering of wages. Similarly, in developing countries, trade liberalization critics condemn its impact on the workers’ living standard which is already perilous. The argument for the low- wage countries is that the domestic firms will be required to lay off their workers, resulting in massive unemployment and lower wages (Conner & Torimoto, 2004). This paper seeks to explain why the argument of trade union for opposing imports from the developing countries is not in the best interest of the country at large.
