Globalizing for Growth
Scenario (fictional): SilverWire software company with 75 employees is located in Seattle, Washington, in the United States. Up until now, the culture has experienced some employee bad behavior and a laissez-faire culture. The company hires mostly locals, and everyone seems to make important decisions. The company has had an informal code of ethics, and it has not been enforced. As a result, there have been increasing incidents of personnel doing consulting work for other companies outside of work hours. The CEO is concerned that their software company could be compromised. Lately, as educators worldwide have increasingly sought out the company’s software, the CEO realizes it is time to reimagine a more diverse, inclusive, and global company while adhering to an ethical code of conduct with uniform responses to infringement.
The CEO knows they will soon need to hire at least another 20 sales staff and additional software engineers to address this increasing global demand. The CEO wants to restructure the company while keeping company costs down as much as possible.

Organizational ethics can only be developed through a series of processes, the first being creating and periodic assessing the organization's core values. A company's culture and subcultures may overlap, which means that more than one culture may exist simultaneously. Management cannot force one culture on the entire company because each division has its distinct history. Accordingly, the size and location of a company's staff will impact its culture, shaped by its diverse workforce. This could create several distinct civilizations in different parts of the nation. Cultural norms, directly and indirectly, impact ethical behavior, which affects compliance. Each recruit and acquisition will cause a shift in your company's culture. Even at the world's largest corporations, this is currently taking place.

A developing company needs to have an ethical culture. Today, many organizations focus on finding the right balance between profit maximization and creating an ethical and moral workplace environment. "What exactly does this mean?" is a valid question. What does it mean to be a part of a "moral" society? Ethical work environments can be fostered in any company by following these guidelines: What is acceptable and unacceptable are clearly defined. Model the behavior you want (especially from organizational leaders) and reinforce the behavior you want, but do not reinforce the behavior you do not wish to if you want to receive the results you desire.
