Hospitality and Tourism Industry Challenges in Hawaii
The hospitality and tourism industry encompasses a broad range of undertakings, including accommodation services, hotels and restaurants, tourism attractions, and transport, including airlines. The sector is the fastest-growing economic sector globally, averaging a 4% yearly growth for the last seven years. Additionally, the hospitality and tourism industry accounts for one in ten jobs creating a positive economic impact that promotes societies' development (UNWTO, 2019). The increasing revenue does not only benefit the hotel owners but as well as the population for which job opportunities open up and can keep their lives running.
And like all other industries, hospitality and tourism is heavily regulated and governed by sets of rules and laws. There are hospitality laws to regulate hotels, restaurants, bars, country clubs, and public accommodation areas. For instance, every place that handles food for customers must, at all times, abide by the food safety and regulations ensuring the purity of the food. Safety of customers is also prioritized, and care is taken to treat customers so that there is no discrimination of any kind and that customers enjoy their experience. Many states have experienced challenges in the hospitality and tourism industry. However, the most affected are states that heavily rely on the industry, such as Hawaii.
Being that it is a service industry, it is not without challenges—the most recent and possibly biggest of them being the global pandemic of Covid-19. Revenues have plummeted with registered losses and setbacks worth billions with the travel bans and hotels that go unoccupied. Despite this, many of the industry players have adjusted to the state of matters and have embraced the new guidelines. Gradually, more people are traveling domestically, and word-of-mouth marketing with people telling their friends and families about their experiences makes the industry a lot personalized. Additionally, Hotels and restaurants have adjusted to the norm of door delivery of their services because many people cannot sit in and have their meals.
More than anything else, this has brought about rapid growth and development in the industry, adapting to the digitization and innovative technology. Airlines are now strongly considering going paperless, substituting their physical passports for digital ones. Demand for service is offered during this time has shifted a great deal, and the industry is adjusting accordingly. The hotel and other accommodation centers are starting to include recordings of plays, concerts, and other entertainment material acquired within Covid-19 safety guidelines as part of customer entertainment. To discourage people from making contact, some of these places have incorporated gaming options where people can either do it alone or battle off with others virtually.
