The theories of entrepreneurship are essential when examining the development of entrepreneurship. Gracia (2019) posits that theories of economic, sociological, psychological, anthropological, and opportunity-based entrepreneurship give us different viewpoints of entrepreneurship.
Background of the entrepreneur
The founder and C.E.O. of Tokopedia, William Tanuwijaya, began as an introvert who liked spending most of his time on the internet. William was born in 1981 in Pematangsiantar, North Sumatera, where he lived humbly with his family. According to Adriennawati (2019), though he loved reading, he had no access to books hence had to wait for his relatives who lived nearby to get him books. Growing up, he was faced with two choices, staying at home or moving to a bigger city to look for opportunities. With the help of his father and uncle, William chose the latter to leave his hometown after completion of high school (Adriennawati 2019). He traveled by a ship from Port of Belawan to Port of Tanjung Priok to get to Jakarta. At Bina Nusantara University, William majored in Informatics.
Unlike his hometown, things ran smoothly in Jakarta: William found no difficulty in finding the things he needed. To him, this was a rare opportunity for him, so he made the most of it. William worked alongside school as an internet cafe keeper because his parent's allowance was not enough to sustain him. As William familiarized himself with the internet, he decided that the only way to resolve the issue in Indonesia was with the help of technology. He, therefore, tried working and establishing this idea at the same time.
The major problem was that it was quite hard finding better examples they could borrow for their initiative. The two feared that perhaps the market would not be favorable in Indonesia. William and Leon got several discouragements from investors who told them that growing this idea needed extraordinary people. However, this did not stop William and Leon from looking for other investors. As they tried finding investors, they sort for a name that would suit the marketplace. They first came up with 'Belanjaaman.com,' then 'Kopaja.com,' before arriving at 'Tokopedia' that stands for Toko (shop) and encyclopedia (Adriennawati 2019). These two got their first funding from an investor who had much trust in them. Their objective was to build the trust users had in the online marketplace.
Despite being in a small office, they captured the attention of several active users. When it started, Tokopedia was unable to do any promotion because of limited funds. However, when users began to spread the news of Tokopedia to others, it soon got to the media. With the help of potential investors, Tokopedia was lucky to receive funding from Sequoia Capital and Softbank. Six years later, after the start of Tokopedia, the company grew...
