Background

Invention
Helicopters play a vital role in improving people’s life. They can vertically take off and land unlike other aircraft (Lockheed Martin, 2020).
What invention do?
Helicopters are widely used to fly in confined spots as well as harsh and inaccessible environments. According to Honeywell (2020), helicopters are efficient, effective, and safer in flying in harsh environments such as well as confined areas.
Speed limits
Most of the helicopters fly at an average of 260 km/ hr. Some helicopters can fly to a top speed of 400 km/ hr, in a stable environment and level. For example, Euro copter X3, fly at a speed at the neighbourhood of 430 km/hr. Above this speed, the helicopters become relatively unstable and risk falling out of the sky Phys.org. (2020). In a nutshell, the helicopter speed depends on the model of the helicopter.
Maximum height
Helicopters can fly to a maximum height of 29,000 feet. This relates to the fact that a helicopter has been able to reach the peak of Mount Everest. However, normal helicopters fly at an average of 1850 feet. For instance, high performance like Agusta A109E flies at 10500 feet, while turbine engine helicopter flies at a height slightly higher than 25,000 feet (Liberty Helicopters, 2020).
Number of passenger
Typically, the number of passengers can ferry helicopter depends on its size, its performance, and the size of the engine. Helicopters can carry “between” 2-8 depending on the model (Whitetracks. co, 2020).
Types of helicopters
Helicopters can be classified into three categories including rigid rotor, semi-rigid rotor system, fully articulated helicopters.

History

Although there were many inventors such as Paul Cornu, Theodore Von Karman who designed a helicopter before the nineteenth century, Igor Sikorsky is considered the pioneer of the world's first practical helicopter in 1939. He invented the mass production of the R-4 helicopter, through the Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft Division of the United Aircraft Corporation. The first mass-production took part in 1942, three years after the first launch in Stratford, Connecticut (Connecticut History, (2020).
The helicopters were specifically built for military search-and-rescue missions in the Second World War. By the end of World War II, the corporation had built more than 400 helicopters (Connecticut History. (2020).
Challenges Sikorsky faced
Igor Sikorsky faced many challenges before his model of helicopter was accepted. It took more than three years before he secured a contract for mass production. These challenges varied from financial challenges, finding raw materials that would minimise weight and designing light engine (Connecticut History, 2020).
