All nurses should not be considered leaders; they should undergo subsequent training so as to acquire the leadership skills. A nurse might be great in his or her profession, but when they are thrust into management or leadership arena. It should be worth noting that for a nurse to be a leader, he or she should be adequately trained and not assumed that such skills are ‘caught’ or acquired (Murray, 2014).From the overall outlook of the term leadership however, a nurse should be empathetic, an advocate and a lifelong learner. All these qualities are characteristic of a leader. In one way or another therefore, a nurse should learn how to be a leader later (Wisniewski, 2016).Thus, all nurses should be leaders.
For a nurse to be a leader, there are other additional qualities that a nurse needs to possess. One should be confident to actually know of what he or she is supposed to be. This in turn means that one should have the courage to take on risks associated with the profession. Thirdly, one should have a view of continuous growth so as to embrace transition and avoid the threat of stagnation. Also, communication skills would be very vital as a characteristic for a nurse to be a leader .It is through communication that one is able to send clear messages and anticipate clear responses (Staples, 2012).
The above qualities bring about the essence of servant leadership, which basically means that a nurse as a leader is supposed to lead by example. Power or authority in this case is not completely vested upon the leader, since the followers can easily relate to him or her without the awe associated with leadership. This is a complete contrast to the traditional centralization of power.
