Urban Ministry Center
The Urban Ministry Center is Charlotte-based interfaith organization. Its mission is to support others, especially the most vulnerable homeless neighbors. They achieve this through the volunteers who dedicate themselves to fulfill that mission as well as through the gifts that they receive from the community. The organization serves approximately five hundred people in Charlotte who are undergoing extreme poverty challenges and as a result are homeless. According to a survey, it hosts the highest percentage of homeless people at forty-seven percent and the highest rate of vulnerability at forty-seven percent (Kmergl, 2014).
Thus, to end homelessness and help people deal with poverty issues, the organization carries out several actions. The first is the provision of basic services and the soup kitchen. The Soup Kitchen serves a hot, nutritious lunch every day to anyone without discrimination. It operates with a different volunteer crew each day which forms about three hundred volunteers each month. Further, it offers essential services to anyone in need. It does so with the aim of restoring and asserting dignity in the homeless neighbors. The services provided include showers, laundry, telephone and Mail, medical care, transportation to clinics, counseling, and support groups (Elevation Church Outreach, 2016).
However, the Urban Ministry Center faces some challenges that limit their capacity to provide the services they need to deliver to the homeless. They lack medical items that affect the health of those that they care for. Consequently, they call out to the public to donate cough drops, razors, scrubs, cold medicine, pain relievers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen and even reading glasses.
