According to Bridge & O'Neill (2012), small businesses are defined as sole proprietors, privately owned corporations and partnerships that have got fewer employees or staffs and/ or less yearly revenue as compared to regular corporations. In other words a business could be described small if it is able to apply for government support to grow. However, the small businesses can be grown to be bigger businesses only if there are strategies in place to make this vision come true. There are so many ways by which small businesses can grow to be what their owners desire them to be. For a business to grow there are some characteristics that the business owners must have before thinking of growing their businesses (Burns, 2010).
This paper examines the characteristics one might need as a small business owner and how one would lead to grow the business. This paper will also answer some of the questions that a small business owner should ask him or herself.

Personal Growth of a Small Business Owner
Personal development is the most important goal for anyone who is interested in achieving business excellence as well as staying top in a competitive market place. Any business owner who is interested in growing his or her business should have some key values and strategies for actualizing the desire. To begin with, he or she should spend time understanding him or herself. Those who have been successful in the past first took time and understood what their values are and their capabilities are. The second thing that a business owner needs to do for personal growth is; he or she should spend time improving themselves. Everyone has got his or her strong points as well as point of weakness. The business owner must ensure that he or she maximizes his or her strengths and at the same time trying to improve on their weaknesses. Any person who would like to achieve personal growth must first carry out their personal SWOT analysis. The third thing that can make an individual achieve personal growth is by spending time sharing personal self. Those individuals that have been successful before were always very generous with their money and time, in other words they are generous and willing to share with others. Other than sharing out money and time, these individuals have shared positive behaviors that are very essential to whom they are (Gibb & Scott, 2010).

Human resources or employees are the cornerstone of any business and business owners should take good care of them. This is because they are the primary people that come into contact with customers and how they are handled will determine the direction that the business will take.
