(Beamon, 1999) defines a green supply chain as the whole cycle involving green purchasing by customers, to the integrated supply chain from the manufacturers and its reverse logistics closing the loop altogether. Green supply chain management has emerged as an environmental innovation solution integrating environmental concerns into logistics. The practice of green supply management has lately gained traction in both academicians and practitioners because of the recent surge in global economic growth. Organizations today are facing more regulatory, communal and competitive pressure to balance between environmental and economic performance. However much organization are trying to achieve this feat, some companies are finding it easier to write optimistic dossiers concerning greenifying its operations than to walk the talk.
Challenges lie on the road to green, some of which are; customers’ unwillingness to pay a premium for the additional costs covered by the manufacturer, the capital-intensive investment required and the complex supply chains of the twenty-first century.
