The Government of America: Ideals of the Founding Fathers - Responses

Read question: In America we are supposed to be a government of the people, by the people, for the people. Do you believe this is the type government we have today? Why or why not?
Then my response: It was the ideals of the founding fathers that the government of America should be a government created by the people, of the people and for the people. However, the current government and the governing practices that we have are not as was projected in the minds of the founding fathers. This is because the government has become a bureaucratic machine that only cares about the interests of a few individuals and organizations and not the people that it was supposed to represent. The views and the opinions of individuals are not commonly regarded or put into account and therefore it is not a government for the people, by the people and of the people. This is not what was aspired to in the minds of the founding fathers when they wrote the American constitution.
Then my peers response: I do believe we have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people - to an extent. Unfortunately, our government, while composed “of the people”, seemingly consists of one particular type - the rich. While these members of the government are elected “by the people”, this has proven to not always support decisions “for the people”. Many decisions made by the government do not necessarily benefit the majority of Americans. For example, power is not distributed equitably and those in poverty struggle to ever get out of that arena. I do believe our government continues to strive to protect the citizenry from enemies and for the most part, provides a secure order by which Americans live and function in society. It is no secret that there are still things we struggle with in the United States, but I think that overall as a country we are still seeking out methods of living that promote a government that is of, by, and for the people.
