The energy sector faces threats of possible terrorist attacks on its strategic elements. The Al Qaeda has declared that the energy sector is its target particularly the oil and gas industry. For instance, through an Al Qaeda blog, the terrorist group called upon US jihadists to damage the Alaskan pipeline in a way that complicates efforts for its repair. The group also threatened to attack tankers and fuel depots in the ocean (Shull, 2006).
In 2001, there was a leakage of over 300,000 gallons of crude oil when they fired a single bullet that hit the Alaskan pipeline. Future attacks on the pipeline in the urban areas where Exxon Mobil operates would result in great loss of life and destruction of the infrastructure. Another terrorism threat for Exxon arises from the fact that some of the oil sources in North African countries are marred by terrorist groups such as the Al Qaeda. Exxon also relies on Canada, Europe, South America and Middle East for oil imports and terrorism threatens its supply (Market Line, 2013).
