Gambling can be defined as a game of chances where money or something of value is placed on a bet or chance of stakes in order to earn value, but the income is uncertain. From a risk-return perspective, gambling is recognized as a risky venture since a gambler can either gain a return or lose his total bet. Investing and gambling are two differing ways of making money where risk is intrinsic since both ventures can lead to a loss of money (Murcko, 2017). Gamblers are usually characterized as risk-takers especially when an individual is not a professional. However, a professional who has mastered the art of placing the odds to his favor tends to earn a return which makes him more similar to an investor, from the risk-return perspective. Therefore, uncertainty is inherent in both gambling and investing and this is the reason why it is considered as a risk-return venture.
Although gambling has not been addressed directly in the Bible, there are various principles of truths that tend to conflict with acts that are similar to gambling (Anderson, 2014). From a Christian worldview, gambling is considered as a greedy means of making money since it is based on the basic impulse of earning a huge return from an unpredictable venture. Therefore, the Bible argues that gambling is a sin since the entire enterprise is numerous full of kinds of other evils. According to the Christian overview, gambling is a burning desire to earn huge amounts of earthly wealth and riches. This often leads to spiritual death as well as frustration, an issue that has been condemned in the bible. According to Mohler (2009), greed is presented in the Old Testament as foolishness and immoral means of making or gaining riches.
Biblical Viewpoint
From a Biblical viewpoint, gambling is wrong since the love for money and worldly riches is a form of greed which goes againstBiblical teachings. In 1 Timothy 6: 10, Apostle Paul said that the “the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil” (Mohler, 2009). In addition, greed is the main factor that made Judas to betray Judas. In the Bible, the deceit that was committed by Sapphira and Ananias was as a result of greed, and it was also the reason why a young wealthy ruler failed to follow the command of Jesus Christ. In Luke 12:16-21, Jesus gave the parable of the rich man who had put his trust on the amount of his wealth. God called him a fool since he ended up losing his soul, and this is an inspirational text that provides the negative impacts of gambling.
Matthew (10:29-30) argues that God is sovereign. In this regard, gambling is considered as a game of taking chances yet people have been commanded in the bible to work hard in the benefit of other people (Ephesians 4:28). However, gambling promotes an attitude of gaining something out of putting little effort (Anderson, 2014).
