Begin, by reading the materials on the background page. Do as much additional research as you feel is necessary. Then address the case assignment.

In separate incidents, All-Star game Most Valuable Player Melky Cabrera of the San Francisco Giants and Former AL Cy Young Award winner Oakland Athletics starter Bartolo Colon were both suspended for 50 games for testing positive for testosterone. Baseball is a business. It is big business. Players are employees. The safety of the employees is an issue. Marketing is a problem and public relations. How does this affect the game?

Unlike other drug problems, this is not a public safety issue. Or is it? Are players role models? You know kids; they see they do.

Let's take this now to the specific level.

Should Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon have received these lengthy suspensions?

KATIE ZEZIMA and, A. G. (2010, Oct 25). Testing for prescription drugs poses quandary for employers. New York Times, pp. 1-A.1. Retrieved on November 27, 2012 from Proquest.

Abstract:

Two decades have passed since the Supreme Court first upheld the right to test for drugs in the workplace. The growing reliance of Americans on powerful prescription drugs for pain, anxiety and other maladies suggests that many are reporting to work with potent drugs in their systems, and employers are grappling for ways to address that.

What companies consider an effort to maintain a safe work environment is drawing complaints from employees who cite privacy concerns and contend that they should not be fired for taking legal medications, sometimes for injuries sustained on the job.

The issue of using drugs at the place of work has been on the lime light for some time now. While some people feel that it is not okay to come to work under the influence, others are defending their right to privacy saying that some of these drugs are medical purposes. One such case involved two major baseball players who were suspended for 50 matches having tested positive for the performance enhancing drugs, testosterone. Melky Cabrera a left fielder had been named the most valuable player the previous two months for the San Francisco Giants, while Bartolo Colon a starter, had been the former award winner of the AL Cy awards (Haft, 2012). Some of the common views include the fact that the human prowess in the sports has come full circle and the sports men women that most people love can only continue to break their own records under the influence of physiological tweaks.
Under the elements of social morals and the normative theories there are different views. Emmanuel Kant is one of the philosophers that brought into the lime light the use of normative theories that can be used to assess the social morals within any societal setting. Given that the baseball sport is a business and inspires very people including the children, doping in the sport acquires a different face altogether.
According to the deontological theory by Emanuel Kant, the actions of any person can be assessed for morality by first looking at the intensions of the person. Then the action would have to assessed through the three imperatives, which include universality, respecting humanity and the universality of the kingdom.
