Another dimension of information privacy is the challenge of protecting consumer information in the face of technology able to track credit and debit card purchases and Internet browsing.

Why are we so concerned about Internet privacy? For example, if I purchase a book on home repairs, Amazon subsequently sends me advertisements for the equivalent of a small home improvement library. Then I start getting pop-up ads, direct mail, even phone calls from companies that market home-improvement products. Why should we be upset about this?

In considering this question, do some research (citations, please) and give some thought to just what is meant by the privacy concept and how it is interpreted or applied in some organizations. What are the deontological and utilitarian implications of these practices?

The use of modern technology equipments in business organizations has developed controversial issues on monitoring of the employees. While employers are engaged in evaluating the activeness and strength of their clients in online marketing, this behavior is termed as violation of their privacy. In fact, employees and clients alike are worried about the intensive invasion of their privacy matters through check and track devices (Beycioglu, 2013). They feel anxious about their stock as well as the safety of their families.
While some of the excuses about internet monitoring can be tolerated, Brennan & Johnson (2004) suggest that such behaviors might have costly repercussions in an organization. He notes that the cost of employees surfing in internet during the working hours for leisure could amount to billion dollars per year. This idea is brought to light as a picture on ethics. Utilitarian theory of ethic indicates that it is the employer’s task to work for the good of all the stakeholders in a business. The Kant theory on Categorical Imperative is used to decide whether an employee should act ethically or unethically with regard to the technology systems (Ferrell & Ferrell, 2010). This theory measures the ‘rightness’ of behaviors and their implications. This argument falls under deontological theory of business ethics. It indicates that as much as the employees’ and customers’ information might be filtered, their privacy rights are violated especially when monitoring is executed without their knowledge (O'Brien & Marakas, 2006).
Honesty considerations are required in the business setting in order to maintain the clients. Business policies on ethics are needed to ensure good for all the stakeholders in a business. This will help the company diverse its marketing strategies since it will keep good image to the customers. Moreover, trafficking of personal information might as well reveal business secrets to the unintended people hence damaging its reflection (Rasmussen & Beck, 2012).
