When the Mets’ slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes decided in 2011 that he wanted to leave his country to play baseball in the United States, he did what dozens of Cuban baseball players have done since the Castro government came to power more than 50 years ago.
Risking arrest as well as their lives, Mr. Cespedes and 10 members of his family fled the island in the middle of the night on a small boat. Twenty-three hours later, they arrived in the Dominican Republic. He then defected, setting him on the road to a multimillion-dollar contract with a major-league team. At least one relative who remained in Cuba was jail, and Mr. Cespedes has never returned home.

The reason for the twenty-three hours voyage was to get to the United States, secure a contract, which would enable him to play baseball with a major-league team. Introduction
Before the Castro government got into power in 1959, baseball players from Cuba used to play in the American Negro Leagues and in Major League Baseball (MLB). However, following the revolution, the government ended professional baseball in Cuba and forbade Cuban players to play abroad. This issue is of grave important because over the years, it has forced many players to find other alternative methods such as traveling in the Atlantic sea in the middle of the night on small boats just to get to the United States. In addition, it has forced the US and Cuba into trade talks for baseball players. Despite the differing opinions many people may have about the issue, it is my intention to show that, for many baseball players from Cuba, getting a chance to realize their dream of playing in the Major League in America is worth risking their life, arrest and defections from international competitions.

Cuban baseball players and the major league
The Castro regime has over the years imposed stringent measures to prevent Cuban baseball players from defecting to the U.S. and play in the MLB. Since relationships between Cuba and the U.S. have been frosty it is difficult to formalize relations without having to allow Cuban players to play in America. The Obama’s administration efforts are unlikely to be supported by the Republicans who control both houses of Congress (Schmidt & Davis, 2015). The lack of political goodwill between politicians from the U.S and Cuba is stumbling block to allowing free signing of Cuban players to play in the Major League. The Cuban government also controls the league deciding the teams that field players and participate in the league (Schmidt & Davis, 2015). The Cuban players ought to be allowed to play in the Major league when there is agreement among the stakeholders from the Cuban government, American government and the Major League.
The case of Yoenis Cespedes who moved to the Dominican Republic and then America to play baseball highlights the challenges faced by Cuban players who are sanctioned for playing abroad. The repercussions affect the family members and one of Yoenis Cespedes’s relatives was jailed for his actions. The assumption that most Cuban players want to defect to the U.S. is far fetched and even those who do understand the implications of their actions on the family members. Currently, there is still risk that the Cuban government would go after those playing in the Major League if they decide to go back to Cuba.
In allowing the Cuban players to head to the U.S., the Cuban government will likely demand for compensations for every player that has left the Cuban National Series. This would merely be a tactical decision since the players would still need permission to leave the country. The international draft cannot resolve the issue of posting fees being imposed by the Cuban government, highlighting the need for gradual changes in the drafting policies. President Obama has been the most vocal calling for formalized relations, but the Cuban government has the ultimate say on the case for Cubans playing in the Major League.
The Cubans players have been moving to the U.S. with the highly rated ones the most likely to leave. Because of the previous embargo on Cuba, the players usually establish residency in another sovereign country before emigrating to the U.S. The Dominican Republic has sent many more players to the U.S despite having a smaller population than Cuba.
