[Date] Dragon boat paddling is a known race by boat paddled by several people. It is powered by the simultaneous rowing of dragon paddles. The secret to this sport is by connecting and, despite having individuals, thinking of each other as one. Succeeding in this sport means the group has a good leader who binds the group into one big movement. Leadership is comparable to leading the dragon boat paddling. You will handle people and teach them how to row your boat together. When you lead, you have people to follow you and your instructions. However, leading is not just about giving instructions and then sending them to do the work on their own. Leading requires skills and knowledge for someone to be an effective leader.
In a summary of Understanding Leadership by Prentice (1), leadership is having a goal to be accomplished. Succeeding in leading means you have reached your goal. Reaching the goal would require someone to be competent in the field. According to Prentice, leaders know how to listen to their team members. They put into consideration what the team members think instead of just the leader's thoughts and ideas. Because of this, the leader encourages the team members to think of their group as one. Leaders should motivate the members to think of ideas that will benefit them as a group and not just an individual. Competent leaders also take into consideration the situation and what the team can do about it (Fleenor, 2). Leaders must understand the situation that the team is in for them to help the team navigate through. The leader must stay in touch with their current situation to know where and how to lead the team properly.
Leading does not stop with being competent; one must know the proper ways to lead. Recognizing the effort and achievement of each other motivates the team to work harder (Prentice, 1). Recognition includes but is not limited to affirmation, feedback, and giving incentives. This action encourages the spirit of the members, thus, giving them the strength to lift the team even more. Organizing and personal abilities add to the competence of a good leader (Gupta, 3).
