Similarities between charismatic and transformational leadership
Both leadership styles are inspiring and hence attract followers. The two leadership styles are similar in that charisma falls under the requirements for transformational leadership. Furthermore, both leadership styles impact change to the supporters. For example, transformational leadership brings change by encouraging delegation of duties hence eliminating dependency on top leadership (Yukl, 2013). On the other hand, charismatic leadership causes changes by challenging followers to take risks and exploit new opportunities.
Differences between charismatic and transformational leadership
A charismatic leader is perceived to be extraordinary by followers who depend on the leader for inspiration and guidance. On the other hand, a transformational leader inspires, develop and empowers the supporters. Another difference is that transformational leadership can be found in any organization at any level while charismatic leadership is rare and only occurs in unusual conditions (Yukl, 2013).
