Case Analysis: College Athletes and Getting Paid

Essay Instructions:

The case method is composed of parts that help frame, shape and hone one’s strategic thinking and conceptual, analytical, behavioral, communication and creative skills. The case method provides a learning laboratory that affords an opportunity to view, analyze, practice and study pragmatic organization problems that many firms and industries face. The case method has its impact from learning by doing. Two basic design principles apply to cases – they are designed to help you think strategically and frame recommendations for decision-making and they are designed with multiple positive outcomes (answers). Therefore, the value of doing a case is not in getting the single right answer – there isn’t one - it is to help you frame a problem statement and perform analyses that support a reasonable course of action.
CASE: College Athletes & Getting Paid
In October of 2019, The NCAA Board of Governors voted unanimously to allow student-athletes to be paid for the use of their name, image and likeness once its three divisions decide on rules for such opportunities. This topic has been a controversial one, as many believe that paying athletes revenue will spoil the collegiate spirit of sports at that level, while others feel that players should be compensated for their talents.
Your job is to analyze this major change in collegiate sports in a few ways. You must: 1) give a synopsis of the case, describing how the NCAA came to this point, 2) Analyze how this will affect the sport, 3) discuss the tension between being a student vs. being an athlete, and 4) make a conclusion on whether you agree or disagree with the change, and provide evidence to support your claim.
Some questions you want to grapple with (will need to address much more than these, but here are some to help you get thinking):
How will students balance school and being an athlete? And what does the NCAA’s move say about the future of the sports industry?
How does educational eligibility play into this (whether their grades affect their sponsorship money)?
Does this change mean that the sport will change? Does it create a bad environment for collegiate sports vs. professional sports?
What are he positives AND negatives of implementing this in the NCAA?
The paper should be 4-5 pages double spaced (not including the a reference page or title page), you have to use references to support your claims (don’t just give me your opinion, give me your opinion backed up with evidence)

Case Analysis: College Athletes and Getting Paid
1. Synopsis
In October 2019, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) permitted student-athletes to earn remuneration for their athleticism, image, fan base, and brand name. The NCAA Board of Governors voted unanimously and looked forward to the rules devised by the three divisions. The consideration of paying student-athletes for participation in college basketball was introduced after receiving California's approval on Fair Pay to Play Act (FPPA). California FPPA is expected to come into effect by 2023. Simultaneously, other states in the United States (US) are also introducing related legislation. FPPA allowed students to sign endorsements and license contracts to materialize the fame earned based on their athleticism (Almasy et al., 2019). However, the emerging opportunity for student-athletes is subject to some conflicts and challenges simultaneously in the latter stages of the academic lifecycle.
According to Richard Burr, Republican North Carolina shared a tweet and suggested taxing student athletes' scholarships since participation in sports would earn them a stable income in exchange for popularity. Division-I has a larger enrollment in athletic programs out of the three divisions (Almasy et al., 2019). This paper aims to analyze the impact on college sports, followed by students' academic and athletic performances, based on scholarly findings before agreeing or disagreeing with the decision.
2. Effects on Sports - Analysis
The FPPA decision holds positive and negative impacts on the sport and NCAA. According to Aguilar et al. (2020), students' participation in collegiate sports is regulated significantly through external motivators, such as fame, recognition, success at the university level, and money. Students are aware of the rewards and tend to dedicate more effort to the game, which is beneficial for sport progress and the career-building of athletes in the future. McDermand (2021) further identified that athletic spending in colleges develops healthy relationships between sports and students. The investments in sports and students ensure credible rewards, which increase the motivation to participate in the long run. Based on the above findings, the decision reflects a positive impact on sports. Students would participate dedicatedly and remain motivated to earn a better income and higher fame at the collegiate level.
However, the decision could adversely result in the harmony of the sport by creating a lousy environment and a strong emphasis on commercialization. Fundamentally, students participate in sports and athletic programs to earn college and university scholarships, including food, accommodation, tuition fees, and related academic expenditures (Rubin et al., 2021). Students understand the value of such lucrative scholarships, tending to make immense efforts towards studies and athleticism. However, a shift in focus towards earning money would drive students away from the quality of athleticism. Students would view sports as an easy source of early fame and money, which s...
