MONITORING EMPLOYEES
The advanced technologies enable the employers in monitoring numerous features of the jobs of their employees. Monitoring activities usually happen on computer terminals, voice mail, telephones, electronic mail as well as the internet. In some cases, this kind of monitoring is not virtually regulated (Stanton & Stam, 2006). Thus, employers may choose to watch, listen and read the greater part of employees’ workplace communications, unless otherwise specifically stated by the company’s policy.
In ethical consideration, this is not usually right. Anything that can be stated as an ethical exercise or rule needs to be stated in the company’s directives. However, this is not the case in monitoring activities, as many employees are unaware of their employers’ intentions of monitory on their recruitment. Most employees consider this exercise as trespass as it happens most of the time without their own consent. The advancement of technology does not give employers the right to be invasive on their employees’ privacy. The guarding and monitoring techniques should be made known to the respective individuals likely to be monitored. That way, the practice will cease to appear intrusive because the workers are fully aware of the rules and regulations of the company.
Any monitoring methods that are considered intrusive to the employees cannot be termed as ethical, which makes the entire practice illegal. If every employer is entitled to privacy in their workplaces, monitoring becomes an evoking issue on their realization. The employers may legally monitor the workplace devises that are usually provided for the employees, for the purpose of work interest and ensuring appropriate usage. This does not entitle them to trespass into what is termed as the employee’s privacy. The employees also need to feel at ease and respected unlike some who feel like prisoners in such circumstances.
