1. Why is the study of bacteria important? Please list the important benefits of microorganisms.
2. Most medically useful antibiotics interfere with either peptidoglycan synthesis or ribosome function. Why would the cytoplasmic membrane be a poor target for antibacterial medications?
3. You are a microbiologist working for a pharmaceutical company and discover a new metabolite that can serve as a medication. You now must oversee its production. What are some factors you must consider if you need to grow 5,000-liter cultures of bacteria?
4. Just before winter break in early December, your roommate stocks the refrigerator with a gallon of milk, but both of you leave before opening it. When you return in January, the milk has soured. Your roommate is annoyed because the milk was pasteurized and thus should not have spoiled. (1) Explain why your roommate’s position is unreasonable? (2) Design an experiment to prove that microbes do not spontaneously generate in milk?

As we know, Dr. Barbara McClintock (1902-1992) was a famous scientist who made several very important discoveries in genetics, and she received a Nobel Prize for her discovery of transposons, popularly called “jumping genes”. 1 Studying bacteria is beneficial to humanity and the rest of the living things. Due to this, we will be aware of the kinds of good and bad bacteria for health. It is important to classify these to prevent harmful effects on the body and the environment. Some bacteria give excellent and healthy benefits while others are harmful, directly or indirectly. Bacteria are not only connected to the human body, but they can also be used in other areas like industry and technology. These microorganisms have several benefits. One example is the bacteria from food (i.e., from the fresh milk of cows). This milk contains little bacteria that are good for the body (Hawksworth & Colwell, 1992).
Moreover, milk is a portion of food in which various types of bacteria may be found. Therefore, milk must be well-processed to avoid spoilage. Milk products like yogurt, buttermilk, and cheese are examples of products from bacteria. Also, the microorganisms that we have in our environment help us in some ways. Microorganisms are capable of fixing nitrogen for the plants to use in food production; they also help the plants absorb the right nutrients; that is why they are kept in the roots. Lastly, the human body gains a massive benefit from these microorganisms: some bacteria, specifically the "gut flora," help digest the food they eat. Bacteria are also the defense team of the body. These naturally give or produce antibodies to fight or slow down foreign viruses that enter the body (Hawksworth & Colwell, 1992).
2 In making anti-microbial drugs, the medications usually target the peptidoglycan synthesis and ribosome function because the manufacturers always treat the host's health as a top priority. These anti-microbial drugs are accountable for killing or just slowing down the growth of the said bacteria. The most common anti-microbial drug is anti-bacterial drugs. The first-line anti-bacterial drugs should be less toxic to the host because they must conquer the virus while creating little to least damage to the host (Devasahayam, Scheld, & Hoffman, 2010).
The cytoplasmic membrane is the last line of defense targeted because targeting the cytoplasmic membrane can create further harm to the host. Unlike targeting ribosome and peptidoglycan synthesis, the cytoplasmic membrane disables the virus because it does not create peptidoglycan. It can compensate for the top priority of anti-microbial, which is toxicity. Targeting the cell membrane will cause harm to the host. An example of this type of drug is "colistin." It is the last resort of the anti-bacterial drug class in the United States because it can harm the kidney (Devasahayam, Scheld, & Hoffman, 2010).
Anti-microbial drugs must be religiously taken by patients with the doctor's consent to fight the virus. If not taken as prescribed, the virus can kill the body's healthy cells, thereby leading to antibiotic resistance (Devasahayam, Scheld, & Hoffman, 2010).
