Introduction
Africa is famous for its diversification of wildlife in its vast game reserves and national parks. The big five: lion, rhinoceros, leopards, buffalo, and elephants have been toping African charts as the main tourist attractions for over the last five or more decades. Although tourism is playing a central role in the growth of most countries' GDP, various researches indicate that countries with a large number of elephants receive a massive number of tourists. Tanzania can be considered a home for African elephants, with almost half of its land surface dominated by Tarangire national park for elephants and baobab trees. A tourist attraction for elephants in Tarangire national park has contributed an average of 21% to the national GDP from the tourism sector in the last three decades (Naidoo, 2016). In the African wildlife conference (AWC) held on 12 March 2019 in Addis Ababa, Tanzania recognized as the most threat to elephants. This was due to high poaching activities that had risen over the last six years, with also an increase in ivory trafficking businesses. The involvement in the illegal trade had significantly affected the countries economy negatively, with most tourists shying from visiting Tanzania. Poaching and ivory trafficking have tarnished Tanzania's global image as a threat to the elephant population, calling for proposals on how to stop poaching to mitigate the decline in the elephant population.
Background information.
The East African based country boasted of having the largest elephant population in the 80s with over 350, 000 elephants. Over the years, poaching has reduced the population to 45,000 figures, which is a drop of 94.7% (Eustace, 2018). Ruaha, Katavi, and Tarangire are the famous elephant biomes in Tanzania. Tarangire is the exceptional one that almost has the total number of elephants in Tanzania and is famous for having the first elephant to deliver twins (Thouless et al., 2016). It also has some other wild animals such as wild beasts, lions, antelopes, and gazelles. In September, it has a vast ground covered with beautiful savannah grass and scattered huge baobab trees. The conducive environment with a lot of foods makes the elephants grow well reproduce more. Africa generally has more biomes favorable for elephants. There is only one thing that you can be assured of in Chobe national park in Botswana; you will see elephants. This biome is dominated by elephants making it to be the largest tourist attraction in Botswana. The recent ban for elephant hunting has slowed down elephant decline in population (Thouless et al., 2016).
Masai Mara and Serengeti national reserve connect Kenya and Tanzania on their borders. The two game reserves are famous for seasonal wild beasts’ migration between the two countries as they look for food across river Mara (Thouless et al., 2016). The two reserves have other animals such as lions, zebras, and elephants with short acacia trees. Kruger national park in South Africa is famous for its huge number of giraffes.
