NS M1D2 Assignment: Geostationary Operational Satellite
Essay Instructions:
• What time is 1800 UTC in Eastern Time? (Be specific. We change clocks twice during the year.)
• What type of radiation does the visible satellite image show? (See Figures 2.8 or 2.9 for radiation names.)
• Does visible imagery measure a meteorological variable? ("Measurements” require obtaining a number and unit of measurement directly off the satellite image.)
• Using a loop of visible imagery, why do land and ocean boundaries not move, but clouds do? (Be complete and specific.)

Question 1 b: Visible Satellite Images
* What time is 1800 UTC in Eastern Time?
1:00 PM of 13:00 EST
* What type of radiation does the visible satellite show?
Visible radiation because it uses sunlight wavelength reflected from the earth’s surface
* Does visible imagery measure a meteorological variable? (Measurements require obtaining a number and unit of measurement directly off the satellite image.)
Yes, the satellite is mounted with an imaging radiometer that gives brightness intensity with wavelengths of 0.65 microns.
* Using a loop of visible imagery, why do land and ocean boundaries not move, but clouds do? (Be complete and specific)
The boundaries of land and ocean are stationary in the loop visible imagery since water has low albedo hence absorbs much of solar radiation. The visible imagery will sense reflection, and there will be less energy reflected off water to the satellite. Both land and ocean are lower reflective objectives on visible imagery and will appear darker. However, the difference between the land and ocean based on their albedo levels will reveal their boundaries which do not move. Separately, the boundaries of the clouds move due to the pictures were taken as a result of the sunlight reflection (Roberts & Biewenga, 2010).
