EPA’s Mission
In 1970, President Richard Nixon established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) due to increased concerns about the deteriorating contamination of water supplies, air, land, and other natural resources. EPA’s mission is to safeguard the environment and human health (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2022). Congress facilitated the creation of this agency to ensure that Americans have clean water, air, and land. In addition, the EPA administers federal laws that protect the environment and public health. For example, toxic sites and polluted lands are cleaned up by responsible parties.
The EPA has effective management comprising a full-time executive board, including five directors and a director general. The activities of this agency are organized into five primary offices each headed by a director. As such, at the top of the EPA’s organizational structure is the director general. The director general and other directors form an advisory committee. The five offices each headed by a director are environmental sustainability, enforcement, evidence and assessment, communication and corporate services, and environmental monitoring and radiation protection (EPA, 2022).
